Biography

Max M. Louwerse is Professor of Cognitive Psychology and Artificial Intelligence at Tilburg University, the Netherlands, and Professor by Special Appointment at Maastricht University, the Netherlands. He worked both in the UK and the US, authored over 200 scientific publications, is a blogger for Psychology Today, and is author of the popular science book Keeping those words in mind: How language creates meaning.

‘ Louwerse reveals how surprisingly similar the challenge is of peering into a human mind and that of peering into an artificial mind, and thus why cognitive psychology has much to offer the field of AI.’

- Max S. Bennett, author of A Brief History of Intelligence.

This is a very accessible and readable book for anyone interested in AI. You will not need a technical background – the book attacks the situation by taking more of a psychological approach by applying a lot of common sense. […] The author’s way of providing real world simple examples makes it easy to relate to the subject matter often by considering everyday life.’

- Kevin Warwick, professor at Coventry and Reading Universities, UK, and author of six popular science books on AI and cybernetics.

'This book explains the tight relationship between AI and cognitive psychology since the beginning of AI 70 years ago. Carl Sagan and Neil deGrasse Tyson have had a gift for explaining science to the people.  Ray Kurtzweil and Yuval Noah Harari have been helping the public understand the past and future of AI. Max Louwerse has written a very engaging and readable book for the public to understand how psychological science can explain many of the mysteries of AI.'

Art Graesser, professor at the University of Memphis, USA and Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Oxford, UK.

"Prof. Louwerse's book tackles a rare but critical task: bridging rapidly evolving AI models with what we know about the human mind. The book takes this challenge on in the boldest way, by considering the fullest range of our mental faculties, from our perceptions to our more complex processes of thinking and reasoning."

- Rick Dale, Professor, University of California, Los Angeles, USA.

"Max Louwerse understands what artificial intelligence is, how it relates to human intelligence and can explain it in a way that you can understand. So if you are interested in machine intelligence and how it relates to humans, this is the book for you."

Marc Brysbaert, Professor of Cognitive Psychology, Ghent University.
