Biography
Daniel Burston is a psychologist, Professor Emeritus and former chair of the Psychology Department at Duquesne University. He is also the author of numerous books and journal articles on psychoanalysis, politics and religion.
“For years now, left politics has been descending into irrationalism and anti-liberalism, abandoning the principles of reason and solidarity. With deep clinical and political insight, Daniel Burston's incisive diagnosis of this phenomenon is both erudite and politically informed. It is essential reading for those that see that the only way to counter the growing threats of right-wing authoritarianism is to contest those same tendencies in what passes for progressive politics.”
Michael J. Thompson, Professor of Political Science, William Paterson University.
“In these authoritarian times, intellectual influencers such as Jordan Peterson, Christopher Rufo and James Lindsay have weaponized critiques of cultural Marxism and critical theory to promote illiberal and reactionary politics while making some valid points about authoritarianism coming from liberals and the Left. However, less polemics and more intellectual history of psychoanalysis, psychology and the Frankfurt School is needed now, and like Paul Roazen before him, Daniel Burston is a master of the craft. People may disagree with his appraisal of specific issues or trends, but this book moves an essential discussion forward.”
Neil McLaughlin, Professor of Sociology, McMaster University.
