IHE Delft PhD Thesis Series

About the Series

IHE Delft PhD programme leads to a deepening of a field of specialisation. PhD fellows do scientific research, often with conclusions that directly influence their region. At IHE Delft, PhD researchers from around the world participate in problem-focused and solution-oriented research on development issues, resulting in an inspiring research environment. PhD fellows work together with other researchers from many countries dealing with topics related to water and the environment.

PhD research is often carried out in the ‘sandwich’ model. Preparation and final reporting – the first and last portion of the programme – are carried out in Delft, while actual research is done in the fellow’s home country, under co-supervision of a local institute. Regular contacts with the promotor are maintained through visits and long-distance communication. This enables researchers to employ solutions directly to problems in their geographical region.

IHE Delft PhD degrees are awarded jointly with a university. The degrees are highly valued and fully recognised in all parts of the world.

Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate

Metal Removal and Recovery from Mining Wastewater and E-waste Leachate

1st Edition

By Suthee Janyasuthiwong
August 18, 2016

Metal contamination in the environment is a persisting global issue. The metal reservoirs in the earth have declined due to society’s needs and due to uncontrolled mining activities. Therefore, the idea to recover metals from waste streams has emerged. In this thesis, cost competitive technologies ...

A Ditadura Militar e a Governança da Água no Brasil (The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil) Ideologia, Poderes Político-Econômico e Sociedade Civil na Construção das Hidrelétricas de Grande Porte (The Role of Ideology, Political-Economic Power and Civil Society in the Construction of Large Hydropower Dams)

A Ditadura Militar e a Governança da Água no Brasil (The Military Dictatorship and Water Governance in Brazil): Ideologia, Poderes Político-Econômico e Sociedade Civil na Construção das Hidrelétricas de Grande Porte (The Role of Ideology, Political-Economic Power and Civil Society in the Construction of Large Hydropower Dams)

1st Edition

By Fernanda de Souza Braga
May 05, 2020

In recent decades there has been an exponential increase in large hydroelectric plants in Brazil, especially in the Amazon region. These large hydraulic structures impact the environment and the lives of people living in the places where they settle and require a special type of water governance. ...

Managing Basin Interdependencies in a Heterogeneous, Highly Utilized and Data Scarce River Basin in Semi-Arid Africa The Case of the Pangani River Basin, Eastern Africa

Managing Basin Interdependencies in a Heterogeneous, Highly Utilized and Data Scarce River Basin in Semi-Arid Africa: The Case of the Pangani River Basin, Eastern Africa

1st Edition

By Jeremiah Kipkulei Kiptala
December 02, 2016

For integrated water resources management both blue and green water resources in a river basin and their spatial and temporal distribution have to be considered. This is because green and blue water uses are interdependent. In sub-Saharan Africa, the upper landscapes are often dominated by rainfed ...

Nested algorithms for optimal reservoir operation and their embedding in a decision support platform

Nested algorithms for optimal reservoir operation and their embedding in a decision support platform

1st Edition

By Blagoj Delipetrev
May 11, 2016

Reservoir operation is a multi-objective optimization problem, and is traditionally solved with dynamic programming (DP) and stochastic dynamic programming (SDP) algorithms. The thesis presents novel algorithms for optimal reservoir operation, named nested DP (nDP), nested SDP (nSDP), nested ...

Inclusive Development and Multilevel Transboundary Water Governance - The Kabul River

Inclusive Development and Multilevel Transboundary Water Governance - The Kabul River

1st Edition

By Shakeel Hayat
April 28, 2020

The four decades long ideological-based insurgencies and conflict in the Kabul River Basin (KRB) have seriously hampered the relations and foreign policies of both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Consequently, it restricts them to solve various bilateral issues including transboundary waters. This lack ...

Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

Optimization of Biological Sulphate Reduction to Treat Inorganic Wastewaters: Process Control and Potential Use of Methane as Electron Donor

1st Edition

By Joana Cassidy
August 18, 2016

This work investigated two different approaches to optimize biological sulphate reduction in order to develop a process control strategy to optimize the input of an electron donor and to study how to increase the feasibility of using a cheap carbon source.Feast/famine regimes, applied to design the...

Multiple Scales of Suspended Sediment Dynamics in a Complex Geometry Estuary

Multiple Scales of Suspended Sediment Dynamics in a Complex Geometry Estuary

1st Edition

By Fernanda Achete
May 11, 2016

Many estuaries are located in urbanized, highly engineered environments. Cohesive sediment plays an important role due to its link with estuarine health and ecology. An important ecological parameter is the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) translated into turbidity levels and sediment budget....

Operational Flood Forecasting, Warning and Response for Multi-Scale Flood Risks in Developing Cities

Operational Flood Forecasting, Warning and Response for Multi-Scale Flood Risks in Developing Cities

1st Edition

By María Carolina Rogelis
July 08, 2016

The aim of this book is to contribute to understanding risk knowledge and to forecasting components of early flood warning, particularly in the environment of tropical high mountains in developing cities. This research covers a challenge, taking into account the persistent lack of data, limited ...

The Use of Delft3D to Simulate the Deposition of Cohesive and Non-Cohesive Sediments in Irrigation Systems

The Use of Delft3D to Simulate the Deposition of Cohesive and Non-Cohesive Sediments in Irrigation Systems

1st Edition

By Shaimaa Abd Al-Amear Theol
April 17, 2020

Sediment deposition threatens the performance of many irrigation systems. Because of the high impact on irrigation performance and crop production, many studies have been done on how to deal with sediment deposition. In this research, the Delft3D model, originally developed for hydro-morphologic ...

Combining Green-Blue-Grey Infrastructure for Flood Mitigation and Enhancement of Co-Benfits

Combining Green-Blue-Grey Infrastructure for Flood Mitigation and Enhancement of Co-Benfits

1st Edition

By Alida Alves Beloqui
March 12, 2020

An increment of urban flood risk in many areas around the globe is expected, accentuated due to climate change and urbanisation. Thus, appropriate flood risk management is crucial. Conventional approaches focus on grey infrastructure, which frequently do not address the root causes of risk. A ...

Integrated Flood and Drought Mitigation Mesures and Strategies. Case Study: The Mun River Basin, Thailand

Integrated Flood and Drought Mitigation Mesures and Strategies. Case Study: The Mun River Basin, Thailand

1st Edition

By Saowanit Prabnakorn
March 05, 2020

Floods and droughts are climate extremes that account for more than 80% of people affected by natural disasters worldwide. Both catastrophes co-exist in many river basins, for example, the Mun River Basin in Thailand, which is selected as the study area. Approximately 90% of rice cultivation here ...

Advancing Robust Multi-Objective Optimisation Applied to Complex Model-Based Water-Related Problems

Advancing Robust Multi-Objective Optimisation Applied to Complex Model-Based Water-Related Problems

1st Edition

By Oscar Osvaldo Marquez Calvo
February 28, 2020

The exercise of solving engineering problems that require optimisation procedures can be seriously affected by uncertain variables, resulting in potential underperforming solutions. Although this is a well-known problem, important knowledge gaps are still to be addressed. For example, concepts of ...
