Biography
Ann Sullivan has over 35 years’ experience in mainstream and specialist education, with a specialism in teaching literacy to learners with complex needs. Ann is the creator and author of the Phonics for Pupils with Special Educational Needs programme as well as Pathway to Phonics, a research-based pre-phonics programme for learners requiring a pre-formal approach to early literacy instruction (2024). The two programmes are used in schools across the UK and in Australia, New Zealand and the USA. She is also the author of Access to Phonics: Practical Access Strategies to Teach Children with Complex Needs of All Ages (2023) and A Parent’s Guide to Phonics (2024). Ann is now an educational consultant, writer and trainer who has worked with schools, educational organisations and governments across the globe.
"Ann Sullivan is a highly regarded expert in supporting reading development in pupils with special educational needs. Consequently, Phonics for Pupils with SEN is a comprehensive, evidence-informed programme that supports teachers to maximise the chances that their pupils will make those all-important initial steps towards reading capability." - Christopher Such, author of The Art and Science of Teaching Primary Reading and Primary Reading Simplified
"The school has been using Phonics for Pupils with SEN for over three years. The programme has unlocked and developed our learners’ reading and spelling skills, making a real difference to their progress and confidence. The thoughtfully designed materials support our complex and diverse learners, and the programme enables each of them to progress at their own individual pace." - Ruth Woodford, Phonics Lead, Northern Counties School
