"The Play Advantage demonstrates that play is primary to how we build a sense of belonging to each other and to the world around us. Through global perspectives on community practice and land-based traditions, the contributors show that playful learning is essential for grounding students in their own histories and environments. This book elegantly dismantles the barrier between 'serious' research and 'joyful' exploration, underscoring that play is the most rigorous way to connect students to their world and their community."
Whitney Aragaki, PhD, co-author of Placed-based Science Teaching: Connecting Students to Curriculum, Community, and Caring for Our Planet
"The Play Advantage addresses one of the most desperate challenges of our time: bridging racial divides through education. By positioning play and game-based learning as a serious pedagogical strategy, the authors demonstrate how learning environments can foster empathy, dialogue, and connection across differences. The combination of a critical social issue—the subject—with an accessible, research-informed learning approach—the vehicle—speaks directly to a generation of contemporary learners while offering educators practical and theoretical insight. This is a timely and compelling read for educators at all levels."
Patrick Aievoli, author of rock • paper • pixels How Our Need to Communicate Created a New Economy, Society, and Individual: What will be the Effects of Artificial Intelligence and Quantum Computing?
"The Play Advantage reminds us that learning develops most effectively when play and community are placed at the heart of education. With over two decades of experience as an international educator across diverse levels and cultural contexts, I deeply value creativity and inclusion. The book brings together a rich collection of stories from around the world, illustrating how playful learning can break down classroom barriers, stimulate innovative thinking, and foster a genuine sense of belonging for every learner. For me, and for many other educators, this book reaffirms that by embracing play, we can cultivate learning environments where inclusion is embedded, curiosity is encouraged, and meaningful connections are strengthened."
Dr. Rebecca Fakoussa, Senior Lecturer in Marketing & Entrepreneurship, University of Northampton (UK)
