Using Postmodern and Poststructural Approaches in Applied Research Connecting Theory, Method, and Practice

By Julianne Cheek, Megan Aston Copyright 2024

Using Postmodern and Poststructural Approaches in Applied Research introduces the complex theoretical approaches of postmodern and poststructural thought in ways that are accessible and understandable.

The book begins by grounding our discussion with the foundational work of scholars who first wrote about postmodern and poststructural approaches. We then follow with examples of how scholars continue to use these approaches and theories today and apply them in different practice areas. Examples are provided from the author’s own research, teaching, and mentorship along with activities for the reader, to support them with their own research and application of postmodern and poststructural thought. Interviews and reflections are shared from students and researchers who have used postmodern and poststructural approaches in their own work.

This book is for students and researchers who want to use postmodern and poststructural approaches to make a difference in practice areas where they work or have connections. It intends to inspire, excite, and support students, academics, researchers, and practitioners to use postmodern and poststructural concepts in their everyday practices.

"This book provides a much needed and accessible guide that introduces poststructural and postmodern ideas and demonstrates how they can be used in research studies. Written by two experts in the field and with a clear practical focus this book will be a valuable resource for both researchers and practitioners in health and social care enabling them to design and undertake research using poststructural and postmodern ideas and ensure their findings make a difference in practice." -- Dr. Sue Peckover, PhD RN

"Aston's and Cheek's book is leading the way for researchers using qualitative critical theories. I am excited to add this book to my library and to see the combining of poststructural approaches with Queer theory and other theories. This book will have an impact on the practical application of postmodern concepts and contribute to social justice actions that are needed in research and practice." -- Dr. Phillip Joy, Applied Human Nutrition, Mount Saint Vincent University, Canada

"As a nursing scholar and educator, I am so excited to see this updated version of a book that has been an important resource for me throughout my career. This new version will support much needed dialogue about relations of power and challenging the status quo in nursing research and practice. The examples and suggestions make this a practical resource for those wanting to apply postmodern and poststructural thinking to their work. This is a must read for health and social care students, faculty, and providers engaged in critical research and practices that aim to transform historically and socially constructed systems and structures." -- Dr. Danielle Macdonald, School of Nursing, Queen’s University, Canada
