Dr. Russell L. Herman is a professor of Mathematics and Professor of Physics at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. A recipient of several teaching awards, he has taught introductory through graduate courses in several areas including applied mathematics, partial differential equations, mathematical physics, quantum theory, optics, cosmology, and general relativity. His research interests nonlinear wave equations, soliton perturbations, nonlinear dynamics, and relativity.

Biography

Dr. Russell L. Herman is a professor of Mathematics and Professor of Physics at the University of North Carolina Wilmington. A recipient of several teaching awards, he has taught introductory through graduate courses in several areas including applied mathematics, partial differential equations, mathematical physics, quantum theory, optics, cosmology, and general relativity. His research interests include topics in nonlinear wave equations, soliton perturbation theory, fluid dynamics, relativity, chaos and dynamical systems.

Areas of Research / Professional Expertise

    Dr. Herman’s interests include topics in nonlinear evolution equations, fluid dynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics, chaos and dynamical systems, signal analysis, and using technology in physics and mathematics. He has delivered close to a hundred lectures in these areas and has published three dozen papers. He has a distinguished 25 year career in teaching, earning several teaching awards. He has directed dozens of undergraduate and graduate research projects.

    He was the Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Effective Teaching, a peer reviewed electronic journal devoted to the discussion of teaching excellence in colleges and universities, , 2006-2017.

    He was named an Outstanding APS Referee in 2018, was chair of Physics & Physical Oceanography and Interim Chair and Assistant Chair in the Department of Mathematics & Statistics.
