Submitting accessible descriptions

Taylor & Francis typesetting vendors can accept Alt Text and Long Descriptions in a variety of formats. Please choose one submission format per title, so that the typesetting vendor can locate all descriptive text in one submission format. Please choose one of the following submission methods:

  • The artwork and third-party material permissions log
    • This template is suitable for all titles which contain at least one image or figure that require permissions clearance. If other images within the book do not require permissions clearance, please use this template for those images too. The completed template must be submitted with your final manuscript to the Editorial Assistant. The Alt Text and any optional Long Descriptions will be inserted into the eBook during the conversion stage of Production.
    • Please download this example package which contains an example Artwork and third-party material permissions log containing example alt text for one chapter, as well as the related figures and images.
  • The final manuscript
    • Final manuscripts are usually supplied in Word .docx format. The Alt Text and any optional Long Descriptions can be contained within the final manuscript, as long as an Artwork and third-party material permissions log is not required for the book. To submit descriptive text within the final manuscript, please preface each descriptive text with the type of description using either [ALT TEXT] or [LONG DESCRIPTION].
    • If you are writing your manuscript in LaTeX, please use the command \Description[<short description>]{<long description>} inside every figure, teaserfigure, marginfigure, or table environment. The \caption code is used alongside the image, but the \Description should be used instead of the image. For example, you can view this image on our General Samples page, and view the LaTeX code below:

      \begin{figure}
          \centering
          \includegraphics{Figure1.1}
         \Description[An open cycle of tissue planted in dish with a nutrient medium, leading to growth which fills the dish, leading to cell dissociation allowing replating to larger surface area dish, starting the cycle over.]{An open cycle of tissue growth which feeds back on itself. Step one starts with tissue dissociation at the top. Step two adds tissue to a dish filled with a nutrient medium, growth of new cells leads to step three where the dish fills its surface area with tissue. Cell dissociation leads to step 4 and the cell sample is replated on a larger surface area medium leading back to step two.}
         \caption{Anchorage dependency and contact inhibition in cultured normal diploid cells.}
         \label{fig:Figure1.1}
      \end{figure}

If you are also submitting ancillary content for use on a companion website or eResource, please read the Companion website and eResource guidelines Opens in new tab or window . All ancillary materials, such as PowerPoints, word art, graphics, or images must contain alt text, and must be supplied with the final resources.

If you have questions about writing or submitting alt text with your manuscript, please contact your Editorial Assistant.

Submitting Alt Text for published titles

If you are an author who has previously published a book with Taylor & Francis or any of our imprints, and would like to retrospectively incorporate Alt Text within your book, please reach out to Academic VIPRequests [email protected] for more information on how this can be achieved. The team will check whether alt text has already been written for your book, and if not, we will be happy to work with you to incorporate alt text into your title post-publication.
